A frayed or snapped lift cable has to be replaced before the door is used again, and both sides should be done together. Each cable runs from a bottom bracket at the door's lower corner up to a drum on the torsion shaft, or over a pulley on an extension-spring door, and with the springs it raises and lowers the door. DASMA notes that the bottom brackets that anchor those cables are under extreme tension, and says worn cables should be replaced only by a trained technician.
A cable rarely fails alone. A kinked or worn cable usually traces back to a rusted drum or bracket, a roller out of its track, or a door that hung unevenly for months. We replace the cables as a set, inspect the drums, bottom brackets and fasteners, check that the cable winds evenly on both drums, and re-balance the door so the new cable is not asked to carry a load the springs should.

- A cable hanging loose or wound crooked on a drum
- The door crooked, one side higher than the other
- Frayed strands or rust brown along the cable
- A snap, then a door that jams halfway
- The door dropping faster on one side
- A cable slapping the wall as the door moves
🌊 The Salt and Surge Factor
Cable ends and bottom brackets sit lowest on the door, which is where water and salt collect. In Hurricane Ian the National Hurricane Center measured surge of 6 to 9 feet above ground in Naples and Cape Coral, 5 to 8 feet in Fort Myers and 10 to 15 feet on Estero Island, and garages that took salt water often show rusted strands and pitted brackets for years afterward. After a flood or a hard wet season we replace corroded cable with galvanized aircraft cable and renew brackets and fasteners that have lost metal.

Support the door

Replace as a set
Correctly sized galvanized cable goes on both sides so the lift stays even.
Inspect the cause
Drums, bottom brackets, rollers and springs are checked for the rust or wear that broke the cable.
Re-tension and test
The door is re-balanced, both cables are checked for even winding, and the door is cycled.
